The Coby White Conundrum: How Good Is He?
The Charlotte Hornets are going to enter the 2026 season with Coby White as their starting point guard. Are the Hornets capping their ceiling at the position?
Coby White has re-signed with the Charlotte Hornets on a three-year deal worth $74 million. He will go into the 2026 season as the team’s starter at point guard after LaMelo Ball was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a package that included Naz Reid.
White was incredibly impressive in his limited minutes for the Hornets last season. In just 19 minutes per game, he averaged 16 points, three rebounds, and three assists on 46% shooting from the field and 39% from three.
White is obviously a good player, but I can’t say many expected him to go into the season as Charlotte’s starting point guard. I don’t know that he’s been properly evaluated in that light yet, despite getting a contract figure ($24M AAV) that certainly indicates his value as such.
I wanted to dive into White’s game, just how good he is (and can become), and pose a simple question: Is Charlotte’s ceiling at point guard capped with White locked into the starting spot?
